Cardcaptor Sakura Movie 2: The Sealed Card ~Review~

I finally took the time to at least watch one of the Cardcaptor Sakura movies, which in this case is the second, Cardcaptor Sakura Movie 2: The Sealed Card. It is actually perfectly fine that I started by the second film I found out because the movies are not in sync with one another, they are in sync with the series. The first movie fits somewhere between some episodes in season 2 of the series perhaps , while the second film is placed after the series had finished airing. This is the last of any anime created under the name of Cardcaptor Sakura.

With all that was said in the first paragraph, to watch this film, some basic knowledge of the series is required. The characters fill us in on a lot of details, but there is still a lot of back story that is needed to be understood prior to watching this. Seeing as this movies takes place after the series, Sakura managed to get all 52 clow cards back, but it seems that once this task is accomplished, another “hidden” clow card is released that is extremely powerful. It contains the power to bring things back to the way they were before the cards were sealed, in turn what this power can even do is steal the 52 cards from Sakura. Syaoran also comes back to the city in this movie and having confessed to Sakura his feeling for her, he has been waiting for her to return the favour. Though, whenever Sakura tries to bring up the courage to to tell him her own feelings, something has to get in the way…

Cardcaptor Sakura is a series that has an important place for me within my love for anime. I remember watching it and loving it when I was a child and unlike some other things in my life that do not matter to me anymore, Cardcaptor Sakura does and I don’t believe that will change. There has yet to be a magical girl series that I have loved more. In a way, what I am sort of trying to say is that this review is in a way biased I guess, considering I would love anything in the Cardcaptor Sakura franchise. Though, even if I do try and separate myself from my biased viewpoint, I think I would still believe that this was a good film.

The last 20 minutes of the movies was when all the action really happened. The rest of the film was a bit slow moving and focused more on building up to those last 20 minutes. In most cases this would not be the best thing for a film to do, but in this case, the making of this film was for closure to a story. The writers probably wanted to give screen-time to all its characters, which turned out to be entertaining enough for me and even if by chance it was not, it wouldn’t really matter because it would be worth those last minutes of the film, which were nothing short from spectacular.

In all, this film brought back so many memories that, that alone made this film worth watching for me. Though, it also was very well done for many reasons and it contained such an adorable scene that really made me squeal like such a pathetic fangirl. The scene that I am thinking of (don’t want to spoil people) would definitely make my to be made list of best moments in animes. Unlike what I suggest by this review though, this film is by no means the best thing I’ve ever seen. Its just that it is difficult in a way to write up reasons why you disliked something that you used to ans still do love so much, but the film was not perfect, its just difficult to say otherwise to something with such an emotional impact on myself. Anyway, this film is definitely a must see for any Cardcaptor Sakura fans and it is shameful how long it has taken me to watch this film. Although there are some stuff that needs to be understood about the series, if you are a fan of the magical girl genre, then I would give this film a try as well. It is truly a shame that no anime distributors have decided to pick up Geneons license to this series to redistribute it on DVD once more because I would have bought it in an instant, but I’ll definitely continue to keep my fingers crossed at the chance!

The movies come at the end of both seasons. The first episode of season two refers to things that happened in the first movie, and Sakura has quite a few cards that she didn’t have at the end of the first season, while movie two provides an excellent end to the series. Coming into the series long after the DVDs were released, I still managed to find a used copy of The Sealed Card at Half Price books. Nice review.

@halfadeckshort: That makes sense of things…I really should try and rewatch the series while adding in the first movie after that season to really get the right feel from it.
That’s a lucky find, there definitely are some DVDs lurking around, but that number is obviously diminishing….

I remember watching all 70 episodes of Card Captor Sakura. But the whole thing was a blur, that I can barely remember any of it anymore. It has been quite a number of years. I remember watching one of the movies long before actually watching the series, so I only had a rough idea of what was going on. (The movie I watched was when they go to Hong Kong).

I don’t think I’ve seen any of the other movies, but that’s okay. The movies seem like a high-production episode, really. ^^

@radiant: Its really been too long since I’ve watched Card Captor Sakura, but once I start rewatching an episode, the memories just instantly flood into my mind. The movie that you watched was the first one in a series of two.
I don’t think your statement about saying they were high-production episodes is that far off, but I would probably add in AWESOME high-production episodes! x)
