Umi Monogatari ~First Impression~

The first episode for this series was just okay. I was actually very disappointed how it ended though because it pretty much leads me to believe that the rest of the series will be completely different form this episode. I was thinking this was going to keep its slice of life atmosphere, but it seems that we’re going to end up more into a “battling the evils” type series because we already have a magic ring about and a giant black cloud of doom looming over the island. Oh the shame, I honestly think this series had a better chance at keeping my attention if we kept to the characters learning about the people in a happy way as they continue to show their naivety (is that a word?) to the world outside the sea.
Maybe my speculations on how this series is going to take a dramatic turn should really be thrown out the window, I guess I shouldn’t make such big speculations after one episode, but it’s just what I felt first after watching it. If I’m wrong, I’ll just wait till the next episode to find out. Anyway, the prettiest part about the episode was without a doubt the artwork shown in the sea, which looked gorgeous! The soundtrack was also definitely a strong point (great opening!). The scene in the sea was a bit too short for me, it took less than 3 minutes I would say for Marin and Urin to decide that they had to leave to try to find the owner of a ring to return it. They left almost without notice, but apparently leaving the sea is a really big deal, but to our main characters it seemed more like a walk in the park…
Kanon is a much more enjoyable character than Marin and Urin and it seems like she’s going to play a big part in the series. I wish they focused more around Kanon in the episode, I can see why they didn’t though, but they spent too long focusing on our characters bending down in their skimpy swimsuits and having guys stare. Anyway, I evidently still don’t know what to think really and a lot of the things that have upset me are relying on speculations, so I think I will give this series a second episode a chance. I’m pretty sure it’s safe to say though that I will not be blogging this series.
